Tip 1. Connect with Others

from the series 10 Tips to Stay Mentally Healthy

Developing and maintaining good relationships will enrich your life by increasing your happiness and improving your health.

Gathering the people you connect with around you

It is important to have people around you that make you feel good about yourself and who can and will support you. Connection happens when you get concrete help. For example when someone helps out with a practical task or when you get emotional support like hearing someone say, “I’m really sorry you’re having a such a tough time”.  It can also happen when your perspective shifts after being reminded that even the moodiest teenagers grow up or when you’re offered helpful advice such as a suggestion to plan a weekly date with your wife.

Do you have a couple of friends or family members you feel comfortable with, who you trust enough to tell them anything? Do you have someone who can help you solve problems or make you feel valued, and who takes your concerns seriously?

Making new friends and connections

If you feel your current connections don’t provide you with enough support, now may be a good time to take steps to form new friendships. Finding new friends who share your interests can be as easy as joining a group or club, perhaps a gardening, hiking, walking or writing group. You could enroll in a class, or volunteer in your community or reach out to someone where you work, study or play. Investing in friendships builds relationships, which creates a strong sense of wellbeing.

Good friends relieve stress, provide comfort and joy, prevent loneliness and isolation, and even strengthen your health. But close friendships don’t just happen. Many of us struggle to meet new people and develop quality connections. Whatever your age or circumstances, though, it's never too late to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and improve your quality of life.

If at any time you would like someone to help you through the process of making new connections, call Margaret Wheat at EveryDay Counselling to make an appointment on 0403 728144.
