Volunteering can be formal or informal
The formal act of volunteering is applying to an organization for example St Vincent de Paul and working in one of their second hand shops or another area, or in somewhere like RSPCA and help care for the animals that are rescued.
Or you could volunteer less formally by simply just contribute to your community by going for a walk, taking a plastic bag with you and picking up litter as you walk. The benefits of this is you are exercising, and cleaning up your environment at the same time. You could take a meal to an elderly neighbour, attend a community festival, write to your local member and encourage him/her to make good decisions for the community and there are many more things you could do.
The benefits of volunteering, lifts your spirits from depression, alleviate your anxiety, raises your self esteem and can also give you a sense of purpose.
If at any time you would like someone to help you get starting with volunteering, call Margaret Wheat at EveryDay Counselling to make an appointment on 0403 728144.
Tip 4. Contribute to Your Community
from the series 10 Tips to Stay Mentally Healthy
Learn or develop a new skill
Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a new skill. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” It is never too late to learn new skills and no reason why you should stop adding to your knowledge just because you are in employment or have finished education.
Volunteering increases self-confidence
Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction. You are doing good for others and the community, which provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. And the better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.
